About RV Carports - Types and Roof Styles

An RV cover or carport is a protective structure that shields your recreational vehicle from the elements. These structures can be open-sided or fully enclosed and are typically made from galvanized steel, which is highly durable and resistant to weathering, rust, and fire.Unlike fabric covers that wear down quickly or wooden structures that require frequent maintenance, metal carports are a long-lasting solution. They’re engineered to meet California’s building codes and withstand local wind and snow loads.

Fully Open with Standard Roof Style

An open carport with a standard roof style is one of the most straightforward RV shelter options available: four strong steel posts support a horizontal roof, with all sides completely open. Think of it as a permanent shade canopy built for your motorhome. The open design allows air to flow freely through the structure, helping to keep your RV cooler and reducing the chance of moisture buildup. More About This Type of RV Carport >

Fully Enclosed with Horizontal A-Frame Roof Style

A fully enclosed RV carport with a horizontal A-frame roof offers added protection for your motorhome while maintaining a clean, classic look. With steel panels on the sides and back and the option to leave the front open or fully enclose it, this structure shields your RV from wind, rain, and sun. The A-frame roof features horizontal panels and a slight pitch, helping water run off more efficiently than a standard flat roof. It’s a great choice if you want extra security and year-round coverage without committing to a full garage. More About This Type of RV Carport >

Attached RV Carport Cover with Standard Roof Style

An attached RV carport is a durable metal shelter built directly onto an existing home, garage, barn, or other solid structure on your property. Instead of standing independently, it integrates with the building it’s connected to—functioning like a heavy-duty metal awning made to fit your RV. This style is ideal for homeowners who want a more streamlined, space-saving solution, especially where yard space is limited. By using the existing structure to support one side, an attached carport can also cut down on materials and overall cost.More About This Type of RV Carport >

FAQs for RV Carport Covers

Regular (boxed-eave) roofs are economical, and best for mild climates.

A-frame (horizontal panels) are an aesthetic preference for some. Great for wind resistance.

Vertical roofs are top-rated for durability—allowing snow and rain to efficiently slide off your building.

Our RV carports are built with heavy-duty steel frames and panels, available in Galvalume or painted steel finishes. These materials ensure greater strength and longevity with minimal maintenance—ideal for even for the harshest environments.

Measure the width, length, and height of your RV—including any slide-outs. A 12-foot-wide carport suits units without slide-outs, while 18-foot width accommodates slide-out models. Length and height should exceed your RV’s dimensions to guarantee clearance.

Lightweight kits may use metal base plates anchored to concrete footings—often without requiring permits. For permanent structures, setting posts directly in concrete is common. Pro Metal Buildings can advise you based on your site.

Permit requirements vary by jurisdiction, and the customer is responsible for contacting their planning department to determine if one will be necessary for the building they are purchasing and for the installation location. If your structure is permanent and set on concrete, a permit and engineered plans are often required. We can supply the Engineered Drawings and Calculation Drawings for an additional cost.

Most installations require basic tools: power drill (or tek gun), rivet gun, saw/snips, tape measure, level, shovel, ladder, silicone gun, and safety gear. Our pre-cut components make the process simple and streamlined.
